Sport at KC
"It's not how big you are its how big you play"John Wooden
Sport is a way of life at KC Junior School.
Kent College is a school steeped in sporting history. We have a reputation for delivering a strong sports programme as part of our diverse and varied school curriculum. The school sees sport as an integral part of a pupil’s life and understands the important role it plays in both general health and wellbeing and the development of competitive sporting talent. Our approach is to ensure there are opportunities for all the children to participate in a wide variety of sports.
The Sports department has a number of key goals:
- To instil a positive attitude towards exercise
- To deliver high level progressive coaching and skill development to all students across all ability levels.
- To offer a diverse range of activities and sporting opportunities across all year groups.
- To develop key life skills such as leadership, communication, decision making and teamwork.

We are fortunate to have a wide range of excellent sports facilities in our Prep schools well as the use of our 14 acre campus for cross country running.
The Sports Hall provides a junior basketball court, three badminton/short tennis/volleyball courts, 5-a-side football pitch, 5-a-side hockey pitch, wall bars and ropes, cricket nets and vaulting boxes and springboards for gymnastics. Our junior sized astroturf pitch[e] provides a netball court and a small hockey pitch while the large hard play area provides three netball courts and a tennis court and it is also an excellent surface for developing skills at football, touch rugby, hockey and cricket.
Additionally we have two grass tennis courts, two 7-a-side football pitches for the Autumn/Spring term and a cricket pitch in the summer term which is surrounded by a grass 200m athletics track.
As well as facilities at Kent College Junior School site, we regularly take the students up to our Senior School where they have the use of the large astro pitch, tennis courts and cricket pitch.

Fixtures - participation for all
There is a full calendar of fixtures against schools in the south east of Kent and further afield, and information about all sporting events and teams can be found on theKent College Sports website.
Every opportunity is made to ensure that all children have the chance to represent the school, as regularly as possible. It is extremely important that each child plays at a level that is suitable for them. This can be achieved through our A,B,C and D fixtures at both U.11 and U.9.
Every time a child represents the school at any sport, it is recorded on a database and each appearance is traditionally called a cap. When a child has reached 50 caps, 100 caps and on the rare occasion 150 caps they will be awarded a certificate in celebration assembly. It is the aim of the PE Department, by providing opportunities for all to participate in sport that every child who has started the school in Year 3, at the minimum, achieves 50 caps.
Saturday sport mornings
We host regular cross-country and athletics events at Kent College Junior School, where a number of local primary schools participate, alongside our own KC pupils. It is a fun family event with refreshments available.
Our year of sport culminates in our end of year Sports Day where the children can demonstrate the skills they learnt during the year and compete for their school house for the awarding of the Kent College trophy. It is a lovely family day out with a fayre and fun and games after the morning of sport.
Students have the opportunity to take part in tours for all the school’s major sports including football, hockey, netball and cricket. The tours are close enough for example Brighton and Ipswich) to ensure the children feel relaxed but also that they have experienced a real adventure with an overnight stay in a hotel.
These are massively memorable moments for the children and the experience is invaluable to them.
Independent Association of Prep Schools Competitions
We have successfully competed in many sporting events over the years as our trophy cabinet bears testament! The students’ success is due to the firm foundations put in place over many years with our regular fixtures programme that all pupils are able to participate in. We compete in IAPS competitions for a whole host of sports and there are regional competitions that the pupils can participate in throughout the year.
Winning competitions is a collective effort and it is important that those not directly involved realise the part they play in it.
Pupils selecting Sport as a GREAT opportunity at KC will be able to develop their technical skills and performance further in sports such as netball, basketball, cricket, tennis, hockey, football and athletics. Our specialist coaches will look at specific areas for development such as Speed Agility and Quickness through practices, speed and endurance work. Our teachers will look at personalised programmes where appropriate and help to support pupils for sports scholarship assessments for entry to senior school in year 7.
