The Information and Communications Technology Department provides a quality learning experience for all members of the school. ICT is central to life in the 21st century and at Kent College is delivered across Key Stage 3, 4 and into the Sixth form as a discrete subject. Increasingly this technology is being developed in all areas of the curriculum as a support platform, aiding learning and teaching and for boarders as a vital link to home and family.
The school uses the Internet and other networking technologies to maximum effect and has a fast (100 Mb/s) filtered broadband connection to the Word Wide Web. Inside the school wireless technology, a virtual learning environment and traditional ICT suites offer an environment where students are able to progress, save and access their work wherever they sit down, be it in a classroom, their dormitory or even on the playing field.
Students are encouraged to use email as necessary and online learning materials are available on every workstation. The school is also able to offer support for laptop users through our wireless network (by agreement). Open throughout the working day and into the evenings, the school operates a number of ICT suites which are used for formal and informal ICT work.
As a discrete curriculum subject the ICT department teaches ICT in Year 7, 8 and 9 as part of a technology carousel. At Year 10 we offer the Award and Certififcate elements of the Diploma in Digital Applications (DiDA) which is a 100% coursework scheme that builds on skills to offer an excellent opportunity to develop capability and problem solving skills. At AS and A2 levels ICT is offered as an academic subject for Year 12 and 13. The taught syllabus ranges from hard skills, such as office applications, graphics and database design, to business and organisational structure.
