An Introduction to the Curriculum
At Kent College the academic curriculum is designed to prepare pupils for life as independent learners. The various phases of education here can be divided into years 7 to 9, culminating in Key Stage 3 tests, then years 10 and 11, at the end of which we sit GCSEs, and lastly years 12 and 13, during which we sit AS levels and A levels.
In Years 7-8, pupils follow the usual range of subjects, with particular emphasis on English, Mathematics, Science, Technology and Modern Foreign Languages, though important disciplines such as History, Art, Music and PE are by no means neglected.
In year 9, Science splits into its three major strands of Physics, Chemistry and Biology, with some choice now available in the field of Music, Art and Technology.
In Years 10 and 11, the vast majority take GCSEs in English (Language and Literature), Mathematics, the Sciences, a Modern Foreign Language, ICT and, as befits a Methodist school, Religious Studies, plus four optional subjects.
In the Sixth Form (Years 12 and 13), pupils can choose freely from up to twenty subjects, listed in the Academic Subjects page. All follow our own Key Skills course which emphasises Careers guidance and a number of Life Skills.
Throughout the school, there is specialised support for pupils with particular educational needs, such as dyslexia or English as a Second Language.
