Shrove Tuesday
22.02.12

Shrove Tuesday is an important day in the Christian calendar of Kent College.
To mark the beginning of Lent, the children made delicious pancakes. Maple syrup, sugar, treacle and lemon juice were amongst the toppings available for the children to try out. We had some expert pancake makers!

The clubs vary each half term. This half term we have on offer the following clubs:

The clubs are fun and an informal way to wind down at the end of the infant day.

Molten League Champions 2011
27.01.12

We were once again delighted to welcome Bob Hope, Managing Director of Molten Sports, to come and present the Molten League trophies to the Albion squad. It was the third time in three years that we had won the trophy, but it was definitely the toughest test yet!

It all started with a 3-3 draw at home with Junior Kings, Canterbury and ended with a 4-1 win over St Edmunds.

In between that were a few ups and downs, particularly when suffering our only defeat to a very spirited performance from Northbourne Park. We lost to a late breakaway goal and it looked like this put a massive dent in to our title ambitions.

However, in a League where there so many close matches and teams winning their home games, it came to a crunch game against Junior Kings, Canterbury, where if we lost the whole competition could have been won by three teams!

The pressure brought out the best from the boys and they played superbly and even though we had to come from behind, we dominated the game from start to finish.

In the end we had the League title wrapped up before the last game, but this was definitely the closest one yet!

Well done to all the boys in Year 5 and 6, as without all the boys' hard work this success would have been impossible to have achieved.

Albion squad: Henry Townsend, Tom Cain, James Smythe, Ollie Weston, Freddie Entwistle, Henry Maylam, Henry Todd, Thomas Hill and Richard Irvin.

Casey - the globe hopping World AIMS Hedgehog
26.01.12

Casey - the globe hopping World AIMS Hedgehog comes to Kent College.

A large number of unnamed hedgehogs were recently released to all of the schools in the Methodist group. They came from World AIMS (Action in Methodist Schools) - the group that works to raise awareness in schools across the group through global education. The children at KC Junior and Infant were quick to name our new friend Casey - the KC Hedgehog and pupils from the school, knowing how much Casey loves to travel, are queueing up to take him on their travels and take photographs when they get there. Casey's adevntures can be followed on the World AIMS website where we will be uploading some of his (or is it hers?) grandest adventures.

Kent College wins National prize as best Church School in the South East Region!
25.01.12

Kent College, Canterbury has just been announced as winner of the London and South East region of the Church School Awards 2012.

The awards, which celebrate the role and work of Church Schools are open to all schools with a Christian foundation and are backed by all major Churches and a number of large charities.

The judges were impressed by the wide range of work that Kent College does in the community. From music outreach concerts to a British Council partnership with a school in Tanzania, from open days on the school farm to celebrating the cultures of all the pupils in the school the judges found the school to be outstanding.

Winning the award means that the school will be invited to attend a gala event in London where they will be joined by the media and Government ministers and presentations will be made.

'When you think of how many Church senior schools there are in the whole of London and the South East this is a huge honour' said School Chaplain, Revd. Dr. Paul Glass, 'and it's a testament to our fantastic pupils and staff.'

Pupil Council 2011/2012
20.01.12

The newly elected Pupil Council (by secret ballot in each year group, from Year 2 up to Year 6) held its first meeting last Thursday.
The chair of the meeting, Mr C Knowles, Assistant Head, welcomed all 10 new pupil councillors and was delighted also to welcome a member of staff, Mrs J Parker, Head of Infants.

Each subsequent meeting, every fortnight, will be based around a manageable, relevant working agenda, which is drawn from a bank of ideas and suggestions from pupils and staff in our school community. There is also a Pupil Council Constitution which clearly defines every aspect of this important body.

Each pupil councillor has an opportunity to voice a concern or suggestion on behalf of their year group or the school as a whole. Following any meeting each pair of councillors report back to their year group with information, questions or decisions on matters discussed and voted on.

The first agenda comprised of initial training and explanation as to the role and purpose of the Pupil Council and being a pupil councillor; then a discussion on our research into the issue of us being a Healthy School (4 main areas being Healthy School, Physical Activity, PSHE and Emotional Health and Well-being). Finally, a discussion on charitable causes we might consider throughout the year.

A practical assignment was given to each year group pair in the form of making a 'Bright Ideas/Suggestions Box' for each year group so that ideas/concerns could also be written down, placed in the box, perhaps named or anonymous, in addition to verbal ideas being passed on.

Boy's Hockey Tour
20.01.12

At 11:00am Mr. Buckley, Mr. Carter, Mr. Smith and Mr. Sweet set off for Ipswich with a coach full of year 5 and 6 boys. All were eagerly anticipating the hockey tour ahead and wondering what might be achieved.

Our first match was against Brandeston Hall, who has hosted many of our hockey and cricket tours. With our friendly rivalry resumed, all three teams played in thrilling matches. The A team managed an impressive 8-2 win, whilst the B's battled hard but came out second losing 6-2, and the C's lost 4-1 despite some brave goal keeping!

After refreshments and speeches we made our way to the hotel for more food. In fact a certain member of staff managed to consume three, yes three puddings! An extraordinary effort!

In the morning, after a hearty breakfast, we made our way to Abbey School, Woodbridge to complete the last leg of our tour. Once again it was fantastic to meet and catch up with colleagues, whom have looked after us annually for at least the last decade!

The games were once again extremely entertaining, with the B's winning a classic 3-2 and the C's just losing out in a tight affair 1-0.

After these two games we were treated to an incredible performance from the A team. They produced some exhilarating hockey moving the ball quickly in and out of the opposition, scoring some magnificent goals. They received plenty of plaudits after the game from spectators and the Abbey PE staff, which was a testament to the way they played. They came out 4-0 winners, against a resilient and well organised defence. This was an encouraging effort so early on in the season.

In the afternoon we visited the new Colchester stadium, for the first time, and we enjoyed a decent 1-1 draw.

The boys had a great tour and I'm sure their hockey is going to come on leaps and bounds due to this experience.

A huge thank you to both Carlos Reynell and Robert Earl, from Brandeston Hall and Abbey School respectively, for looking after us so hospitability.

Thought For Food!
11.01.12

Attached are some photos of the children making bird feed to put outside on our school grounds.
We are fortunate enough to have a camera set up from which we can view all visiting birds from our classroom.
Each week, the year one children will go down to the school bird feeder with three cups of bird feed.
